Swipe Right on Your Dream Job!
I always love to kick things off with a solid analogy. So here goes...
GETTING A JOB IS JUST LIKE DATING...
We've all been there - scrolling through endless job listings on job boards, sending out countless resumes, and getting little to no response.
The job search process can feel overwhelming and frustrating, just like dating.
But, what if we told you that the job search process is not that different from dating?
In fact, by understanding the similarities between the two, you can improve your job search and increase your chances of finding your dream job.
LET ME TELL YOU A STORY...
Imagine yourself as a single person, looking for love in a sea of options.
You turn to dating apps like Tinder, swiping through endless profiles, trying to find the perfect match.
But, just like a dating app, job boards can present you with a vast number of options, making it easy to get lost in the shuffle.
You apply to hundreds of jobs, hoping to increase your chances of finding the right one. But, just like swiping through dating profiles, applying to job after job can feel like a numbers game, a quantity thing.
YOU PROBABLY FEEL FRUSTRATED...
As the days, weeks and months go by, the feelings of frustration and hopelessness start to set in. You feel like giving up and just settling for the first job that comes along, just like settling for a date just because you're tired of being alone.
BUT APPS AREN'T THE ONLY WAY TO FIND DATES...
IN FACT THEY ARE NOT THE BEST WAY TO FIND RELATIONSHIPS!
There are other options when it comes to dating... and if job boards are just like dating apps... the same goes for applying for a job!
HAVE YOU EVER TRIED SPEED DATING?
In the dating world there is speed dating! A chance to get face-to-face with people for a short period of time to see if you make a connection before you go further.
Just like speed dating, job fairs provide you with the opportunity to make face-to-face contact with an employer and make an impression.
You get the chance to showcase your personality, skills, and experience in person, rather than just on paper.
This personal interaction can be more powerful than a resume or application.
BUT BEING "SET UP" IS EVEN BETTER
Just like a blind date, referrals involve somebody vouching for you.
A friend, family member, or colleague can introduce you to their connections and recommend you for a job.
This personal recommendation can make a big difference, increasing the chances of an employer considering you for the job.
BUT HOW CAN YOU INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING AN INTERVIEW BY 10X?
Finally, networking and employee referrals can be compared to dating somebody that you spend time around.
Just like dating somebody you spend time around, networking, and employee referrals provide you with the best chance to get an interview and therefore the job.
Building relationships with people in your industry, attending networking events and joining professional groups, can open doors to job opportunities.
And when somebody you know, who already works for the company, puts in a good word for you, it can make all the difference in landing your dream job.
In conclusion, the job search process is not that different from dating. By understanding the similarities, you can improve your job search and increase your chances of finding your dream job. Instead of relying solely on job boards, try speed dating at job fairs, leverage your connections with referrals, and build relationships through networking.
Just like dating, it's all about quality over quantity, and the right approach can make all the difference in finding the perfect match.
Maybe a different analogy?
GETTING A JOB IS NOT THE LOTTERY
Most job seekers are focused on the quantity game, where they apply to hundreds of jobs on the job boards, thinking that the more applications they submit, the greater their chances of getting a job.
This approach is similar to buying lottery tickets, where the more tickets you have, the greater your chances of winning. Unfortunately, this approach is not effective in the job search process.
Applying to jobs on the job boards is like a lottery, where the odds of getting a job are low.
Jobseekers who apply to jobs they already know the company or know somebody who works for the company by referral are 10 times more likely to get an interview.
This is because referrals provide a personal recommendation and increase the chances of an employer considering you for the job.
It's important to note that nobody gets a job without getting an interview.
Therefore, the focus should be on getting an interview, not on applying to as many jobs as possible.
The key is to stand out and make a personal impression on an employer. This can be done by networking, building relationships, and getting referrals.
In summary, the job search process is not a numbers game, where the more applications you submit, the greater your chances of getting a job. Instead, it's a quality game, where building relationships, networking, and getting referrals to increase the chances of getting an interview and ultimately getting the job.
