Retail Cashier – Wags to Riches Thrift Store

Schedule: Tuesday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., with occasional Saturdays.

About Us

Wags to Riches Thrift Store is operated by Appalachian Highlands Humane Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving, protecting, and advancing the lives of animals throughout the Appalachian Highlands.

Every purchase at Wags to Riches directly supports our animal rescue and lifesaving programs. We are looking for a dependable, customer-focused Cashier to join our team and help us provide an exceptional shopping experience while supporting our mission.

Position Summary

The Retail Cashier is responsible for providing friendly, professional customer service while accurately processing sales transactions and maintaining an organized checkout area.

This position requires an individual who is dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a busy retail environment. The ideal candidate enjoys interacting with customers, works well with others, and takes pride in contributing to a mission-driven organization.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Customer Service

• Greet customers and provide friendly, professional service.
• Assist customers with questions, merchandise inquiries, and purchases.
• Handle customer concerns professionally and refer issues to management when necessary.
• Thank customers for supporting Wags to Riches and the Humane Society.

Cash Register & Sales Transactions

• Accurately operate the cash register and point-of-sale system.
• Process cash, credit card, and debit card transactions.
• Maintain accurate cash handling procedures and follow register accountability requirements.
• Follow established policies regarding discounts, returns, exchanges, and sales promotions.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked checkout area.
• Maintain accountability for all transactions processed during assigned shifts.
• Promptly report transaction erros, suspected discrepancies, or register concerns to the Operations Manager.

Store Operations & Teamwork

• Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and welcoming retail environment.
• Return misplaced merchandise to the appropriate departments.
• Work cooperatively with management, fellow associates, and volunteers.
• Follow established store policies, procedures, and operational standards.
• Complete assigned register opening and closing duties, excluding cash drawer counting and reconciliation, which are performed by the Operations Manager.
  
• Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Attendance and Reliability

Reliable and punctual attendance is essential to this position. The Retail Cashier must consistently report to work for scheduled shifts and be prepared to begin assigned duties at the designated start time.

Because this position provides primary checkout coverage, dependable attendance is critical to maintaining daily store operations.

Qualifications

Minimum of one year of recent cashier, retail checkout, or point-of-sale experience required.

• Experience processing cash, credit card, debit card, and electronic payments accurately.
• Ability to follow established cash-handling procedures, maintain accurate transaction records, and cooperate with management during daily register reconciliation.
  

• Strong customer service and communication skills and basic math skills.
• Demonstrated attention to detail, integrity, and accountability when handling financial transactions.
• Dependable, punctual, and capable of maintaining consistent attendance.
• Ability to follow established procedures and work independently under management supervision.
• Ability to work the posted schedule, including occasional Saturdays.
• Comfortable working in a busy retail environment.
• High school diploma or GED preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand for extended periods throughout the workday.
• Ability to bend, reach, and move throughout the store as needed.
• Ability to lift up to 25 pounds, with assistance available for heavier items.

Work Schedule & Compensation

This is a full-time, hourly position with a starting pay rate of $15.00 per hour.

The regular work schedule is Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with occasional Saturdays as needed.

An unpaid meal break is provided in accordance with store scheduling procedures.
