Full-Time Visiting Faculty in Physics, Optical Engineering, and NanoEngineering for 2026-2027

The Department of Physics, Optical Engineering and NanoEngineering (PHON) at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology seeks applicants for a full-time visiting Assistant Professor position to support the department, primarily in teaching introductory physics courses, starting November 30, 2026. Our teaching-focused mission is “to provide students with the world’s best undergraduate science, engineering, and mathematics education in an environment of individual attention and support.” If this resonates with you, then we think you’ll love what we have to offer.

The candidate we hire will be joining a 21-person team responsible for providing undergraduate major programs in physics, nanoengineering, and optical engineering, along with an M.S. degree in optical engineering. The department also supports several minors and certificates, including a semiconductor certificate, astronomy minor, quantum information certificate, experimental and theoretical physics minors, and a solid-state physics/materials science minor. Active research programs and interests include material science, magneto-optics, x-ray absorption spectroscopy and diffraction, medical imaging, semiconductors, gravitational and quantum physics, and optics. In addition, the department operates a state-of-the-art cleanroom (MiNDS Facility), as well as two observatories, the Oakley Observatory on campus and the Oakley Southern Sky Observatory in Australia.

The successful candidate will use effective approaches to teach introductory physics courses and labs. If interested, the candidate will have opportunities to establish their area of research in partnership with undergraduate students. It is desirable that the successful candidate will be able to support existing upper-level lecture or laboratory courses in our curriculum. Please visit our course catalog at https://catalog.rose-hulman.edu for descriptions of our existing courses.

Essential job responsibilities include teaching and mentoring students, primarily in the introductory calculus-based physics courses, both lectures and laboratories, along with curriculum development and continuous improvement, and participation in departmental activities. Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate education, including laboratory instruction.

A completed Ph.D. degree in engineering, physics, or related discipline is preferred, but candidates near the end of their Ph.D. work will be considered. Commitment to excellent teaching and enthusiasm for delivering individualized attention and support to undergraduate students is a significant criterion for success at Rose-Hulman. The department and institute place a high value on supporting all our students; candidates who are excited to enhance student engagement and community are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates who can further broaden and enhance the educational experience of our students are encouraged to apply.

Review of applications will start October 26, 2026 and will continue until the position is filled.  Candidates should submit: a current curriculum vitae and a 1-2 page cover letter describing their interest in the position and their vision for teaching at a primarily undergraduate institution; a 2-3 page teaching statement addressing teaching philosophy that includes evidence of teaching effectiveness (or potential for excellence in teaching) and a plan for continued growth in teaching and course management; and a list of 3 references. Please apply online at https://jobs.rose-hulman.edu.
