Industrial Designer – Rhino 3D, Mechanical Design & Product Development
Miami Gardens, Florida
FULL_TIME | USD 85000.00 - 110000.00 YEAR

About the Position

We are a growing custom architectural lighting manufacturer seeking a technically skilled Industrial Designer with advanced Rhino 3D proficiency, strong mechanical design capabilities, and hands-on manufacturing experience.

This position combines creative product development, complex 3D modeling, mechanical design, 3D printing, and practical manufacturing.

We are not looking for someone who exclusively creates sketches or renderings. We need someone who understands how products are manufactured, how components connect, and how complex designs become functional physical assemblies.

The ideal candidate combines strong design instincts with practical engineering knowledge and enjoys working directly with manufacturing teams to bring ambitious concepts to life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop complex 3D models, curved surfaces, and geometric assemblies primarily using Rhino 3D.
  • Transform concepts, sketches, and architectural drawings into manufacturable products.
  • Design mechanical connections, including fasteners, brackets, joints, mounting systems, and alignment features.
  • Develop multipart assemblies with proper tolerances, clearances, and fastening methods.
  • Design functional 3D-printed components, prototypes, molds, and tooling.
  • Develop strategies for dividing large designs into smaller printable components that can be accurately joined together.
  • Design products for CNC machining, laser cutting, sheet metal fabrication, bending, welding, and other manufacturing processes.
  • Create and review technical drawings, 3D assemblies, and fabrication documentation.
  • Help lead 3D drafting activities and coordinate design development with other CAD personnel.
  • Work directly with manufacturing teams on prototyping, assembly, troubleshooting, and design improvements.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced Rhino 3D proficiency, including complex NURBS surfaces, solids, and accurate geometric modeling.
  • Strong mechanical design aptitude and understanding of fasteners, joints, tolerances, and assembly methods.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D printing, functional prototyping, or additive manufacturing.
  • Experience designing products or components that have been physically manufactured.
  • Ability to create and interpret technical drawings.
  • Strong spatial reasoning, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable collaborating directly with fabrication and production personnel.
  • Portfolio demonstrating technical design ability and real-world mechanical or manufacturing projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of relevant experience in industrial design, product development, mechanical design, or digital fabrication.
  • Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent hands-on experience considered.
  • Grasshopper experience for parametric and computational design.
  • SolidWorks experience, particularly mechanical assemblies.
  • AutoCAD proficiency.
  • Experience with multipart 3D-printed assemblies, mold design, or large-format additive manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of CNC machining, sheet metal, aluminum fabrication, and other manufacturing processes.
  • Experience coordinating 3D design projects or reviewing other designers' work.

What We're Looking For

We value designers who think beyond the CAD model and naturally ask:

  • How will this be manufactured?
  • How will the parts connect and align?
  • What fastening or joining method makes the most sense?
  • How can a complex design be divided into manufacturable components?
  • How will it be assembled, installed, and serviced?
  • Can we make it simpler, stronger, or more efficient?

We are looking for someone who combines creativity, mechanical reasoning, and practical manufacturing knowledge to solve challenging design problems.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $85,000–$110,000 annual salary, depending on qualifications
  • Performance-based bonus opportunities
  • Health insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Opportunities for technical leadership and professional growth

Application Requirements

A portfolio is required.

Please submit a resume and portfolio featuring relevant projects, preferably including Rhino models, mechanical assemblies, 3D-printed components, fabrication drawings, and photographs of finished products.

We are especially interested in examples demonstrating how components were designed, manufactured, connected, and assembled, rather than renderings alone.

Selected candidates may be asked to complete a short practical design exercise.
