Job Duties

Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277-bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of Summer 2027.

CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.

Step into a role where your creativity, compassion, and clinical expertise make a real impact every day! As a Recreational Therapist on our dynamic inpatient behavioral health team, you will design and deliver evidence‑based therapeutic recreation experiences that help adults build skills, rediscover strengths, and move confidently toward recovery and community reintegration. You’ll lead engaging therapeutic groups, provide individualized interventions, and collaborate closely with an interdisciplinary team of dedicated professionals—all while shaping a treatment environment rooted in dignity, hope, and trauma‑informed care. From planning hospital‑wide events to crafting meaningful treatment plans, documenting progress, conducting assessments, and supporting patients through every step of their journey, this role offers both challenge and reward for a motivated Recreational Therapist ready to inspire change. If you’re passionate about empowering others and want to bring energy, innovation, and heart to your practice, we want to meet you!

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

• Knowledge of recreational therapy principles, psychiatric rehabilitation, and behavioral health treatment best practices.
• Knowledge of recovery-oriented and trauma-informed models of care.
• Knowledge of group dynamics, therapeutic recreation interventions, and effective patient engagement strategies.
• Ability to conduct comprehensive clinical assessments and develop individualized, evidence-based treatment interventions.
• Ability to facilitate meaningful therapeutic groups and individual sessions with diverse patient populations.
• Ability to communicate clearly and collaboratively with patients, families, interdisciplinary team members, and community partners.
• Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to behavioral changes and crisis situations.
• Ability to maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation within an electronic health record system.
• Ability to organize workload, prioritize tasks, and excel in a fast-paced clinical environment.
• Skill in therapeutic communication, conflict resolution, and verbal de-escalation techniques.

This position is primarily scheduled Monday–Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., offering a consistent weekday routine while still requiring flexibility to support patient care needs—including occasional evening, weekend, and holiday coverage. Although the role is currently assigned to the Maximum-Security Unit, assignments may shift as operational priorities evolve, giving you the opportunity to contribute your expertise across a variety of treatment settings.
