Get to Know Your Team: 

• Hillcrest Hospital Cushing is a 99-bed community-owned facility offering a variety of services for patients of all ages in the Cushing, Oklahoma area. The hospital offers 24-hour emergency services, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, diagnostic imaging, orthopedics, neurosurgery, urology and more. We also offer inpatient behavioral health care to adults experiencing a mental health crisis by offering a fully staffed team of licensed professionals, personalized treatment plans and continued support after being discharged.

• The Nurse Extern shall be responsible for assisting in the care of patients under the direction of an RN.
• The Nurse Extern may perform all the duties of the nursing assistant, as well as other technical skills which have been learned in a nursing education program and for which competency has been previously demonstrated under the supervision of a faculty member, with the exception of administration of medication or blood products.
• The Nurse Extern must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit.
• This individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status, interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs.
• The Nurse Extern is to participate in the provision of patient care as described in the Patient Care policies and procedures.
• He/she is expected to adhere to and abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the Oklahoma Nursing Practice Act.
• The Nurse Extern is a temporary position for the participation in the Nurse Extern Program made available to nursing students who have completed 3 semesters of RN school.

A Registered Nurse is directly responsible at all times for the Nurse Extern, who is functioning as an unlicensed person with a defined job description. The RN must be physically present in the institution, not, however, providing direct supervision for every activity.

Job Requirements:

• Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent
• Current completion of 2 semesters of RN school
• Must maintain a current certification in BLS
• Must maintain any other requirements for each specific department

Preferred Job Requirements:

• Proficiency in nursing assistant care, nursing skills and oral communications
• Must be able to follow directions and perform work according to department standards under the supervision of an RN
• Must be emotionally mature and able to function effectively under stress
