Long Island Labs is seeking a Probiotic Microbiologist to lead molecular and cellular testing of probiotic products. This role designs and runs PCR/qPCR assays, extracts DNA from complex matrices, and uses flow cytometry to identify, quantify, and characterize probiotic strains. The successful candidate will own specialized probiotic testing protocols and translate complex data into clear, defensible results for clients and internal teams.

Key Responsibilities

Molecular methods

  • Design, optimize, validate, and execute PCR and qPCR assays for microbial identification and quantification, including primer/probe selection, standard curves, and efficiency and specificity checks.
  • Perform high-yield, high-purity DNA extraction from complex biological matrices (e.g., capsules, powders, foods, beverages, fermentation samples), and verify extract quality and concentration.
Cellular analysis

  • Use flow cytometry for cellular analysis, live/dead viability testing, and population characterization, including staining strategies, gating, and instrument QC.
Probiotic testing

  • Lead specialized probiotic testing protocols, including strain identification, stability (shelf-life) testing, and efficacy evaluation.
  • Support label-claim verification by correlating molecular, cytometric, and plate-count results.
Data, documentation, and communication

  • Analyze complex datasets, troubleshoot assay performance, and draw defensible conclusions.
  • Maintain rigorous, contemporaneous documentation of methods, raw data, and results.
  • Present findings to cross-functional teams and clients through written reports and verbal briefings.
Quality and compliance

  • Ensure all laboratory operations comply with standard operating procedures (SOPs), quality control guidelines, and the lab's ISO/IEC 17025 quality system.
  • Author and revise SOPs and support method validation, internal audits, and corrective actions as needed.
  • Follow laboratory safety, biosafety, and waste-handling requirements.
Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a closely related field strongly preferred.
  • Candidates with an M.S. and extensive industry experience will also be considered.
Core technical skills (required)

  • Proven hands-on expertise in PCR, qPCR, DNA extraction, and flow cytometry.
Specialized experience (preferred)

  • Direct background in probiotic testing, microbiome research, or microbial strain characterization.
  • Experience working in an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited or other regulated testing laboratory.
Analytical skills

  • Strong ability to interpret complex biological data and troubleshoot assay development.
Communication

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting and collaborative research.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed primarily in a laboratory environment with exposure to biological materials (BSL-1/BSL-2), chemical reagents, and laboratory equipment.
  • Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow all biosafety and chemical hygiene procedures.
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods, perform repetitive fine-motor tasks (e.g., pipetting), and lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Occasional extended or off-hours work may be required to meet stability-study timepoints or client deadlines.
